The Division for Media Use Research focuses on the analysis of media use and media reception in modern societies and its change through Internet and computer-mediated communication. The emphasis lies on fundamental research of long-term transformation processes of the public, particularly in the field of political communication.

Our research is reflected by the courses we offer for the institute’s study programs. In the B.A. program, we convey primary concepts of public and public opinion and theories of media use. Examples are concepts like Digital Divide, Uses and Gratifications, Selective Exposure, Framing, or the Two-Step Flow of Communication. In close cooperation with the Divisions of Media Analysis/Research Methods and Communication Theory/Media Effects we contribute to the teaching of the methodical and methodological basics of empirical research (data collection and analysis). Within the master's program, we offer research-oriented courses on current issues of media use and public communication.
