The point of departure for this German-Indian academic exchange can be traced back to October 2007 when TERI University and Freie Universität Berlin established a formal academic cooperation. The Environmental Policy Research Centre (FFU) of the Freie Universität Berlin has been renown for international comparative environmental policy and climate research for more than two decades. The FFU works both in practical applied environmental research and basic research on ecological modernisation and industrial change, and it provides policy consultation for national, as well as international, governmental and industrial organisations. Additionally, higher education is a vital pillar of its field of activities. Since 1996, the FFU also coordinates interdisciplinary study programs.

TERI is a research university, founded by the internationally renown "The Energy and Resources Institute". It is rooted in the comprehensive research, consultancy, and outreach activities of TERI, a non-profit independent research institute and recognized globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development.
