About Us
The “Policy Assessment Group” at the Environmental Policy Research Centre analyses governance and policy approaches for promoting environmental and sustainability goals. In this context, we examine both the content of individual policy fields and the related political processes. We conduct both basic research in the field of political science and applied research aimed at developing and assessing specific policies and programs.
Much of our academic research has taken a multi-country comparative approach. By comparing successful governance approaches across countries, we are able to identify the determinants of successful policies, explain patterns of policy innovation and diffusion and compare the outcomes of these policies within different country contexts. Our research has contributed to the development of theories on policy innovation and diffusion and broader questions of policy change within the realm of environmental and sustainability governance.
This basic research informs our policy-oriented work and vice versa. We draw on our understanding of political processes and policy change to assess the effectiveness of existing governance mechanisms and for developing new policy approaches. The group regularly conducts policy analysis commissioned by the German government, the European Commission, the OECD and others. This practical work in turn provides valuable insights for the framing of new questions and approaches in an evolving research agenda.
