Berlin Sustainability Talk: Sustainable Perspectives for Metropolitan Regions. Ex-ante Impact Assessment Tools for Sustainable Planning and Decision Making

Jan 18, 2011 | 02:00 PM

Lecture and discussion with Dirk Wascher, Senior Researcher at the Environmental Policy Research Centre, Berlin and Alterra, Wageningen

Dirk Wascher will present some key findings of the SUSMETRO project. Making use of ecological footprint of urban populations, SUSMETRO offers decision support for land use planning in metropolitan regions. With the help of a multi-layer GIS analysis that involve rural-urban classifications, landscape types and socio-economic farming data Dirk Wascher and his colleagues first establish a spatial profile of a metropolitan region.

The project is based on a knowledge-based and participative approach by allowing participants to engage in a ‘game’ for commonly developing sustainable future perspectives for their metropolitan region. Throughout the iterative processes, participants not only make use of the data and tools that are being offered, they also establish their own region-specific sustainability criteria and develop own design proposals. Throughout the process, Knowledge Brokerage (KB) tools are being used as the basis for qualitative research methods.

The talk will be held in English.

The Berlin Sustainability Talk is a monthly brown bag seminar at the Environmental Policy Research Centre (ffu). It presents a forum for discussion and exchange about ongoing research projects and recent trends in environmental policy research with scholars of other institutes, business representatives, politics, and public administrations as well as the interested public.
