The research group regularly organizes a monthly seminar series entitled "Berlin Sustainability Talk" on current research and policy discussions in the field of environmental policy and sustainable development. The research group also organizes the international “Berlin Conferences on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change“.

LIAISE Innovation Report on "Transdisciplinarity"
The 5th issue of the LIAISE Innovation Report deals with transdisciplinarity. It reflects the fact that knowledge production is increasingly transgressing the (disciplinary) boundaries of science and is becoming more inter- and transdisciplinary.

New PolRess Discussion Paper

Mongolian Government Delegation at the Environmental Policy Research Centre (FFU)
A delegation from the Mongolian Government, including Prof. Dr. Lundendorj Nanzaddorj, adviser to the Minister of Justice of Mongolia and director of the Mongolian law institute, as well as some of his employees visited the Environmental Policy Research Centre on November 23rd.

LIAISE Toolbox Meeting
A project meeting in the EU Network of Excellence LIAISE (‘Linking Impact Assessment Instruments and Sustainability Expertise’) was held in Berlin on 28th November 2012. The topic was the LIAISE Toolbox which is currently under development.

Dr. Klaus Jacob participated in the conference “The Future of Green Growth and Green Jobs in Israel - Presenting Research Findings & Discussing Steps towards 2013” in Israel and spoke on “Greening the Economy: Deindustrialization or Prospects for Jobs and Welfare?”.

Dr. Klaus Jacob participates in workshop “Linking Policy Impact Assessment and Sustainability Expertise“ in Vigoni, Italy
The workshop was held on October 18-21. LIAISE Network of Excellence - Linking Impact Assessment to Sustainability Expertise, Ecosystem Services Partnership, Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission invited distinguished experts with special interest in impact assessment and ecosystem services.

Dr. Sabine Weiland at IIASA 40th Anniversary Conference "Worlds within Reach - From Science to Policy"
The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) celebrated its 40th Anniversary with the conference “Worlds within Reach – From Science to Policy”, which was held from 24-26 October, 2012 in Vienna and Laxenburg, Austria. In this event, Dr Sabine Weiland presented a poster of the LIAISE Network of Excellence that focused on its networking approach between science and policy.

At a workshop on Green Investment sponsored by China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and UNEP’s Green Economy Initiative, Rainer Quitzow delivered a presentation on Germany’s experience in developing the country’s solar energy market.

2012 Berlin Conference – A great success!
This year´s Berlin Conference on “Evidence for Sustainable Development”, held from 5-6 October, has been a great success. This was the 11th conference in the well established series of European Conferences on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change.

Guest editors of the current issue of UVP-report on the subject “Impact Assessment – Yet Another Assessment Instrument” were Johanna Ferretti (FFU) and Aranka Podhora (Zalf). The issue deals with the situation of impact assessments (IAs) in Germany and the European Union. The articles focus mainly on environmental aspects of IAs.

Interview with Dr. Klaus Jacob on Deutschlandfunk
On the occasion of the World Summit for Sustainable Development which is currently taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Klaus Jacob gave an interview for the Deutschlandfunk radio’s programme “Forschung Aktuell” on June 18, 2012. In the interview he made an assessment of Agenda 21, the action plan that has been adopted during the first Earth Summit twenty years ago.

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the LIAISE Network of Excellence, which is co-coordinated by FFU, jointly organised a workshop on “Modelling Capacities for Policy Support in Europe”. The event is held on 5 June, 2012 in Berlin.

Dr. Klaus Jacob presented LIAISE Toolbox at Joint Workshop of JRC and LIAISE on Soil Conservation in Ispra, Italy
Dr. Klaus Jacob has participated in a Workshop on April 24th of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and the Network of Excellence - Linking Impact Assessment to Sustainability Expertise (LIAISE) on the topic of “Mainstreaming soil conservation into policy impact assessment – Linking Sustainability Expertise”. Dr. Jacob introduced the LIAISE Toolbox for IA Tools.

LIAISE Session on „Does evidence help to promote transparency and accountability?” at the 2012 Earth System Governance Conference
In the context of the LIAISE (‘Linking Impact Assessment Instruments and Sustainability Expertise‘) Network of Excellence Dr. Sabine Weiland organised a panel at this year’s Earth System Governance Conference, which was held from 18-20 April in Lund, Sweden under the heading „Towards a Just and Legitimate Earth System Governance – Addressing Inequalities”.

Lecture by Klaus Jacob at the McPlanet-Congress 2012
Dr. Klaus Jacob was giving a lecture on the topic “Green Economy: Expectations, Conflicts and Positions” at the McPlanet-Congress in Berlin, Saturday, the 21st of April, 2012. The lecture was part of a workshop on the topic “Capitalism: Black spot on a Green Economy” that was organized by the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation.

3rd Annual LIAISE Meeting in Bilbao, Spain
The LIAISE ('Linking Impact Assessment Instruments and Sustainability Expertise') Network of Excellence, which is co-coordinated by FFU, held its 3rd Annual Meeting from 14-16 March 2012 in Bilbao, Spain. Six researchers from FFU, among others Klaus Jacob, Sabine Weiland and Dirk Wascher attended the meeting, which was hosted by LIAISE partner TECNALIA Labein.

Presentation on Solar Energy in India
On December 15, 2011 Rainer Quitzow held a presentation on the development of solar energy in India at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. The presentation was part of the second steering committee meeting of a joint research project with ZEW and the Fraunhofer Institute of Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) entitled "Lead Market Strategies: First Mover, Early Follower and Late Follower".
