Abstract

The German Energiewende in the context of the two-degree objective affects all societal levels. In order to reach the German national targets on climate and energy policies incisive changes, also at the regional and urban level, are indispensable. Especially the cities´ contributions to the German Energiewende are crucial to realize this all-embracing transformation.

In the context of this dissertation project, the modes of urban governance of the energy system´s transformation in Berlin will be empirically analyzed, taking into account participatory elements, questions of social and environmental justice as well as the managing and coordinating role of the local government. At this juncture, the transition process will be assessed through the different perspectives of the actors involved in correlation to the Berlin-specific structural challenges.

Objective of the research project is to draw conclusions concerning the successful transition-management. Therefore, this dissertation can make a contribution to the difficult and complex task of urban governance of the Energiewende in a multi-level-system. In addition, it provides helpful findings for urban sustainable development.

The dissertation project is associated with the Helmholtz-Alliance ENERGY-TRANS.
