Noriko Sugiyama is a Post-doctoral researcher and a former associate Professor at the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Nagoya University in Japan and now is a Guest Researcher at the Freie Universität Berlin.

Her research topics are Local Climate policy, cities network for climate protection, regional energy policy and so on.

She has researched local climate policy in Japan, especially promoted ”The Local Governments Climate Partnership project” with Climate Alliance, which compares local climate policies among three countries: Japan, Germany, and the United States.

Her PhD is from Nagoya University. She has engaged in following research projects at Nagoya University.

1) Practical policy study for establish or re-establish the local climate policy through comparison and analysis on communal climate policy in Japan, Germany and United States (with Climate Alliance) 2007-2009

2) Study on the Strategic Urban Planning and Assessment of Low-Carbon Cities (research project of Ministry of the Environment) 2008-2010

3) Study of CO2 Large-scale Reduction Policies for Creating Local Economy of Self-sustainability and a Possible Employment Creation, and their Evaluation Approach (research project of Ministry of the Environment) 2009-2011

4) A Study on Urban Infrastructure and Institution for Low Carbon Transport Systems Focusing on Electric Vehicle Utilization (research project of Ministry of  Environment) 2010-2011

She was a lecturer at Meijo University and Nagoya Sangyo University. And she has career as a certified weather forecaster.

During her current stay at the FFU, she works with Prof. Miranda Schreurs focuses on comparative climate policy and energy policy in Germany and Japan.
