Does the program suit my requirements?

If you are considering applying to the Master’s program “Sociology – European Societies”, please take some time to look into its contents and structure via the Online Studies Selection Guide (OSA, Online-Studienfachwahl-Assistent). This way you can avoid frustration with the study program.

After completion you should be able to assess whether:

a) the Master’s program corresponds to your personal interests and

b) your competences meet the requirements.

What are the admission requirements?

The Master’s program is addressed to first degree graduates in sociology and other social sciences who attended sociological courses during their studies.

Therefore the entry requirements are:

  1. A Bachelor of Arts degree (or equivalent) with at least 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits of course contents in Sociology. 60 ECTS points are equivalent to approximately one year of full-time study or 12 courses.
  2. English proficiency at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. You can find more information and an overview of accepted certificates of your English language skills on our FAQ page "Which certificates will be accepted as a sufficient proof of my English language skills?'

Applications are reviewed by the admission committee. Mere fulfillment of entry requirements does not guarantee admission though – it also depends on your grades and the number of applicants.

How do I apply?

There are two different procedures for application, depending on whether you obtained your first degree (Bachelor or equivalent) in Germany (application directly via Freie Universität Berlin) or outside of Germany (application via uni assist). Please consider the detailed information about the application procedure and required documents on the website "Application Procedure for Consecutive Master Programs at Freie Universität Berlin".

When do I apply and when will I be informed about my application status?

Admission for the first master semester is only possible for the winter term. You can apply between April 15 and May 31. You have to submit all relevant documents during that period.

The Admissions Office of Freie Universität Berlin sends letters of admission and letters of rejection via regular postal service starting at the beginning of July.
