Breakfast Book Launch and Panel Discussion "European Public Spheres. Politics is Back"

Jul 15, 2015 | 08:30 AM - 10:00 AM

The Research College “The Transformative Power of Europe” and the German Institute for International and Security Affairs – Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) kindly invite you to the breakfast book launch and panel discussion on the occasion of the recently published volume "European Public Spheres. Politics is Back" (ed. Thomas Risse).

The book offers a profound analysis of the politicization of public spheres in Europe, thereby providing an insight into the development of a European public sphere over the last sixty years. It furthermore discusses various aspects of the relationship between Europeanization and European identity. The collection of contributions from leading scholars, whose work has been at the forefront of research on the politics of the European public sphere, develops one powerful claim: the Europeanization of national and issue-specific publics is here to stay.

In order to discuss the issues raised in the book, we would like to invite you to join us for a panel discussion in the premises of SWP in Brussels. Next to KFG research director Thomas Risse the following panel members will contribute to the debate on the politicization of the European Public Sphere:

  •          Reinhard Bütikofer (MEP, The Greens/European Free Alliance)
  •          Edgar Grande (contributing author, Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich)
  •          Monika Hohlmeier (MEP, Group of the European People´s Party)

The discussion will be chaired by Anne Lauenroth (SWP) under the Chatham House Rule*.

The event will be opened at 8:00 am with a breakfast reception. To receive more information on the book and its authors, please visit the publisher’s website here.

Please register for the event via this link or by e-mail (a short e-mail to transform-europe@fu-berlin.de with your name, institution and e-mail address) until July 6 the latest!

*As the Chatham House Rule applies to all SWP meetings, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed. As a matter of confidentiality, photographs, video or audio recordings as well as all kinds of activities on social media are not allowed during our meetings.
