Ph.D. Project: Europeanization, Norm Diffusion and Domestic Compliance in Turkey; How Political Colour of the Government Matters? (Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Tanja A. Börzel and Prof. Dr. Thomas Risse)

How, under which conditions and to what extent does promotion of the EU’s democratic norms lead to internalization and consolidation (of these norms) in Turkey? How does political colour of the government affect (facilitate or impede) this process?

This study investigates the EU’s promotion of democratic norms defined under Copenhagen political criteria and the domestic compliance in Turkey at three levels- norm empowerment, adoption and institutionalization since 1999. The study particularly seeks to shed light on the ‘processes of conflict, resistance and politics surrounding the process of the EU’s norm promotion’ and to bring the domestic politics to the forefront. To do so, the study adds norm empowerment as an early stage of norm adoption to the analysis and aims to develop alternative hypotheses about the scope conditions under which different party political constellations impede/facilitate the norm adoption and institutionalization.
