Veranstaltung zu marginalisierten Räumen in Ägypten
Beyond Society, Legitimate Hopes and Dreams
Marginalized and "Informalized" Spaces in Egypt
Freitag, 19:30, Werkstatt der Kulturen, Wissmannstr. 32, Berlin-Neukölln
News vom 16.04.2013
As most of the political regimes in the Middle East represent certain class interests, other sectors of society are beyond the states’ policies. The slums of Cairo, and other Egyptian main cities, are evidence of such policies. Both the former Egyptian regime and the current one frequently propose huge projects that have never been undertaken for developing these areas and providing basic public services. In the absence of basic conditions of human rights, the inhabitants of such neglected areas have created and developed their own life which includes different types of economy, culture, and so on. In the course of the 25th January revolution, these people have had a crucial role in shaping the revolution and have represented the numerical majority of the mass demonstrations. Hoping to benefit and attain basic human rights, the residents of these slums have disappointed and discovered the fake promises of the new regime. This panel will discuss the different proposals that have been presented by different political and religious groups/ parties to develop these areas. By “legitimate”, we mean the basic “legitimate” rights of those people to hope and dream; at the same time, we mean how the religious “Legitimate” parties/ figures approach this problem. Within this context, the discussants will go back and forth to present historical experiences as well as current views of these neglected areas, and raise questions about the efficiency of the proposed projects by the state and the NGOs.
In this context, Mayadin al-Tahrir e.V. is devoting its attention to the topic of informal spaces and marginalized people on the evening of the 19th of April 2013. Mayadin will also present its projects and activities in Egypt, which focus on women empowerment and children education. In addition, an auction of some photos of the exhibition “Streets of Liberation” will take place. The earnings from the auction as well as from the entrance fees (5 EUR) will be invested in current projects of the Mayadin al-Tahrir e.V. in Egypt. This event is hosted by and held in cooperation with Werkstatt der Kulturen in Neukölln, Berlin.
