Implementing sustainability indicators in cities: A comparison of Germany and the United States

Description (English)

Sustainability indicators, by helping to quantify the notoriously vague concept of sustainability, can help cities implement sustainable policies. This project will examine six environmental leaders in the United States and Germany to understand how they have implemented sustainability indicators into the decision-making process, as well as how competing models of development can hinder this process. The goal is to better understand the role sustainability indicators can play in policy development, to what extent the economic growth model prevents the implementation of sustainable policies, and to learn best practices that can aid other cities in developing successful indicators.

Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren helfen Städten eine nachhaltige Politik einzusetzen, indem sie den schwammigen Begriff “Nachhaltigkeit” vor Ort operationalisieren. Dieses Projekt bezieht sich auf sechs Vorreiterstädte in USA und Deutschland und will durch eine Untersuchung ihrer Umsetzung von Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren verstehen, wie das zugrundeligende Entwicklungsmodell – d.h. ökonomisches Wachstum – die Umsetzung von Nachhaltigkeit verhindert. Daraus soll erklärt werden, welche Rolle Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren im Steuerungsprozess spielen, inwiefern das Wachstumsmodell ihrer Umsetzung entgegenwirkt und welche Best-Practices in anderen Städten genutzt werden können, um Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren in der Politik zu integrieren.
