On August 30, 2021, the first workshop from INCREASE project workshop series on SARS-CoV-2 pandemic took place virtually. With the specific focus on health, emergency and disaster management systems in Iran and Germany, the first workshop was intended to initiate an introductory conversation on the COVID-19 situation in both countries. Almost 30 experts from various German and Iranian disaster management organizations participated in the workshop. Mr. Detlef Cwojdzinski, who currently manages the vaccination centres in Berlin, and Mr. Jürgen Schreiber, the general secretary of German Association of Disaster Health Care offered valuable insights on challenges and problems in dealing with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Germany, especially reflecting on existing national and federal state civil protection and disaster management systems. From Iran, Dr. Hamid Reza Khankeh, the head of Health in Emergency and Disaster Research Center of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences in Iran, gave an illustrative presentation on challenges and lessons learned from COVID-19 management within the country´s centralised and vertical health emergency and disaster management.
