News from Feb 24, 2020

On February 17, 2020, the Disaster Research Unit (DRU) at the Freie Universität Berlin invited various actors in international disaster relief to discuss existing anticipatory approaches for displacement/migration and disasters. The workshop brought together representatives from the forecast-based financing section of the German Red Cross, UN OCHA, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), the START Network, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Federal Office of Migration and Refugees, the NGO Practical Action and the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Rostock and discussed the new field of anticiparory approaches that is currently establishing itself. There is a multitude of different approaches at the interface between data science and humanitarian aid, which is promising for future refugee situations. However, it emerged that the primarily socially determined processes are extremely complex and therefore, esp. with regard to tipping points, can only be forecasted to a limited extent.
