Research Report on Post-Assad Syrian Media System available now

Research Report on Post-Assad Syrian Media System available now

News from Feb 25, 2026

The study explores the Syrian media ecosystem that evolved in the year following the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, when disinformation and inflammatory speech played a crucial role in escalating ethno-sectarian tension and armed conflict. It analyses the impact of disinformation and prevalent news narratives on Syria’s various ethno-sectarian communities; it also analyses the new working conditions of journalists operating in different regions of the country, the media policy of the new government and the coexistence of partial and parallel media subsystems.

The study was co-authored by Carola Richter, head of the division for international communication, Asiem El Difraoui, coordinator of the initiative “Media Literacy for the Mediterranean” and Anja Wollenberg, research director at MiCT – Media in Cooperation and Transition.

It is available Open Access here.
