Teaching and Theses

Teaching

The courses deal with topics such as communication policy, media economics, and media structures, and also relate to the research projects carried out by our division. On the one hand, the courses teach the theoretical and methodological foundations for independent work in these subject areas. At the same time, teaching is also intended to enable students to become professionally qualified by developing skills that are relevant for working in media-related fields (media organizations, associations, regulatory authorities, etc.) or academia.

To implement this concept, we offer various types of courses:

  • BA basic lecture “Basic Structures of the German Media System”: Introduces this subject area and the relevant theories, content, and developments associated with it.
  • Basic seminars (especially BA) on media policy, media economics, and media structures. These seminars are offered regularly and serve to actively develop and teach essential theories and issues to students by reading texts relevant to the respective subject area, writing their own academic papers, and practicing presentation skills.
  • Advanced/research seminars (primarily MA or advanced BA): In these seminars, students independently develop knowledge on specific topics. These topics are usually more closely linked to ongoing research projects.
  • Qualification colloquia: In the BA/MA colloquia, students receive coaching on how to develop their qualification papers.

Blackboard is the central point of contact for organizing courses. There you will find all course materials, submission folders for exposés, term papers, or Webex links for online sessions. Last-minute information is also sent to course participants via the Webex email distribution list.

Final colloquium

The BA & MA colloquium serves as support for the development of your own qualification papers. The first sessions consist of ideation workshops for finding and developing topics. Afterwards, questions about suitable theory and methodology are explained and, if necessary, content input is provided by the lecturers. In the colloquium, work progress is also discussed with the lecturer and tips and tricks for the work process are exchanged.

Advance registration is not necessary; simply come to the first session of the relevant colloquium. Everyone is welcome, regardless of whether you only have vague ideas for topics or already have a finished concept!
