Title: Online discontent: Comparing the Radical Right on Facebook

When: Tuesday, November 26, 2019, 2-4 pm (c.t.)

Where: Garystr. 55, Room 105

Abstract: The surge of the radical right is often linked to its successful use of social media. In this talk, I will discuss how the radical right in Western European countries use social media, specifically Facebook. I will show how online mobilization of these groups can still be linked to the offline context, despite the transnational character of social media platforms. The talk will address the tactics of the radical right with respect to their discourse on enemies and the use of internet memes. The talk ends with a methodological reflection: social media offers novel opportunities to study hate groups, but increasingly impose limitations to researchers.
