New FFU Report on transformation-oriented sustainability strategies

News from Jun 04, 2020

Ecologically sustainable development requires dealing with nature in a way that takes into account its ability to regenerate and does not exceed the planetary boundaries. This implies a solution to persistent environmental problems, which are characterized by the fact that they are closely linked to the established economies and lifestyles and are therefore difficult to solve. Against this background, transformation-oriented sustainability strategies at the level of the German federal states are considered in this work as political instruments that can lay the foundations for a transformative sustainability policy and thus indirectly for transformation processes towards ecological sustainability.

After the operationalization of a transformation orientation in sustainability strategies and the evaluation of the first sustainability strategy of North Rhine-Westphalia, it is examined which processes and actors have contributed to a transformation orientation of the first sustainability strategy of North Rhine-Westphalia. Participation processes, evidence-based, and inter-ministerial coordination, as well as the interlocking of these three sub-processes, are analyzed in the period from 2013 to 2016.
