Project description

During a two-week excursion 15 students of the Freie Universität Berlin vistited Kenya in September 2007. The excursion was a cooperation between the FFU and the Moi University in Eldoret/ Kenya.
During the visit, the German and Kenyan students had seminars in the field of “Environmental and Natural Resource Governance.” They had discussions with practitioners and learnt about specific Kenyan environmental and natural resource issues and policy responses. In addition, the students conducted their own small research projects.
Kenya is faced by a double-edged problematique: limited national governmental capacity and pressing environmental problems. There are also many questions related to the interaction between state and non-state actors and among different governance levels - from the international to the local levels.
Meetings were held in Nairobi and Eldoret with representatives from international and national research institutions: the Worldforestry Centre (ICRAF), the Institute for Law and Environmental Governance (ILEG), and the African Centre for Science and Technology (ACTS)), as well as representatives of the United Nations Environmenal Program (UNEP, Regional Office for East Africa und International Branch), various agencies for development cooperation (Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Afrika-Büro), the administration (National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA)), and representatives from civil society (National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and the economy (Kenyan Flower Council).

The excursion results are published on the website http://www.zukunft-erde-ev.de/?page_id=9
