Joint implementation of 2030-Agenda / SDGs and Paris Agreement
Umweltbundesamt
Five years after passing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the Sendai-Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, there is considerable space for disillusionment: the implementation proves challenging, and progress does not suffice for achieving the political goals within the determined period. Thus, the question emerges how an (ambitious) implementation can be fortified. One fundamental assumption supposes that synergies and co-benefits between policies can be utilized, and co-operation between processes can be intensified.
The consortium of Öko-Institut e.V., Freie Universität Berlin (Environmental Policy Research Centre, and Akademie der Katastrophenforschungsstelle), and Ecologic Institut works on the following aspects:
- identify synergies and challenges especially between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) process and Paris Agreement: that covers i.a. identifying (yet implemented or pledged) promising co-benefit approaches e.g. with respect to climate mitigation actions, climate adaptation strategies, or nexus-approaches in climate and resource policy
- identify elements for "sustainable adaptation pathways" and transformative climate adaptation that promise useful for the joint implementation of SDGs and Paris Agreement and should be reinforced within international co-operation and SDG implementation
- strengthen promising approaches for the joint implementation of 2030 Agenda / SDGs and Paris Agreement
- support the professional debate with respect to the intended 2nd report about Germany's contribution to SDG implementation to be presented at the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2021. Therefore, the federal government's opportunities for action and specific steps that can support the joint implementation of SDGs and climate goals (including climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction) and deminish conflicts in goals should be evinced and assessed
