Climate policy has the best prospects of success when it relies on the considerable potential of merchantable technical problem solving. Although the potential of technically based climate policy is not unlimited, eco-efficient innovations have a special opportunity structure that by far outweighs other approaches.
However, the enormous risks of climate change demand additional politically forced technical transformations: smart technology forcing.
Alongside with diffusion of radical innovations, “policy acceleration” plays a key role (also as a research topic). German climate policy since 1998 exemplifys this. Nevertheless losers of this innovation process (dinosaurs) still could settle the race by using their traditional authority, an issue that is central for each innovation strategy.
With our guest, Martin Jänicke, we discuss in particular, which policy innovations have already been initiated by climate policy and which ones it still waits for.
The Berlin Sustainability Talk is a monthly brown bag seminar at the Environmental Policy Research Centre (ffu). It presents a forum for discussion and exchange about ongoing research projects and recent trends in environmental policy research with scholars of other institutes, business representatives, politics, and public administrations as well as the interested public.
