New Dataset by Diana Panke and Sören Stapel: Overlapping Regionalism (OVREG)
Diana Panke and Sören Stapel have released a new dataset, Overlapping Regionalism (OVREG) 2.0, which systematically captures overlaps between regional international organisations (RIOs).
News from Apr 01, 2026
OVREG provides information on 73 RIOs from 1945 to 2020 from both a RIO and a member state perspective. OVREG I focuses on the organisations’ perspective, mapping shared memberships and policy competencies between RIOs. OVREG II takes a member state perspective and captures when states are members of two or more RIOs, and they are equipped with identical policy competencies. By integrating these perspectives, OVREG allows researchers to examine how overlapping regionalism has evolved across time and regions and under which conditions overlapping regionalism emerges and increases.
The Overlapping Regionalism (OVREG) database has been developed as part of the research project “Overlapping Regionalism in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe Compared”, which was funded by the German Research Council.
