Center for Transnational Studies, Foreign- and Security Policy (ATASP)
Senior Research Fellow - Professor & Chair in International Relations, European University Institute
During his stay at ATASP (June-December 2019), Checkel is working on two projects. The first rethinks the relation between international institutions (IIs) and national communities, arguing that - to date - we have focused on too limited a set of actors (elites) with too narrow a theoretical and methodological toolkit. Drawing upon social anthropology, he is exploring the role of practice - captured through ethnography - in shaping the II/identity nexus. The argument will be applied to several case studies on the relation between the EU and German identity. In a second project, Checkel returns to a favorite topic - process tracing - and examines how it has been used or misused by students of international political economy.
