In their guest article Prof. Dr. Tanja A. Börzel and Prof. Dr. Thomas Risse argue that Ukraine should be granted the status as EU candidate country. This is a strong and important sign of the EU against Putin's aggression. A withdrawal would damage the EU's credibility in questions of other potential accession countries like Moldova, Georgia oder the western Balkan states. Internally a delay or rejection threatens to undermine European integrity which might in consequence make it more difficult to react to member states such as Hungary or Poland which currently contest the liberal script of the EU. Therefore the EU should demonstrate the willingness to sustain the international liberal order by standing with Ukraine.
