Cooperation with Cairo University

Challenges and Transformations in the Wake of the Arab Spring - Adressing Social and Political Change through Teaching and Research

with funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The project builds on the longstanding partnership between Cairo University and Freie Universität Berlin, specifically between the EuroMed programs and the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Politics. In order to address the challenges of the current political and social transformations and their ramifications for higher education and the social sciences in Egypt and elsewhere, the project is intended to deepen the partnership, extend emerging regional networks and contribute to institutional transformations by enhancing the quality of teaching and research. It includes further partner institutions from Jordan, Tunisia and Libya.

The project includes workshops for the modernization and adaptation of curricula of the Master EuroMed Program at Cairo University as well as for the development of a social sciences course at the German Jordanian University. Advanced training courses in teaching methods are embedded in the workshops in order to enhance staff-capacities in didactics. In addition staff exchange and an innovative student-exchange seminar will be offered. By convening in a joint conference and publication in 2013, the project focuses on research and teaching capacities of young researchers from Egypt and the broader region.

  • Kick-Off Workshop June 17th-24th 2012 in Berlin

  • Student-exchange seminar in the German winter term 2012-2013
