Religion can divide people — or strengthen democracy. As religious and identity-based polarization grows in Germany, this project explores how civic education can harness religion's democratic potential rather than let it become a source of fragmentation.

Who we are
An interdisciplinary team of scholars with backgrounds in political science, theology, cultural studies, and civic education, and practitioners in antisemitism and racism prevention and interreligious dialogue.

What we do
Using participatory and action research, we investigate the conditions for pro-democratic religious education. From this, we develop concrete concepts and formats to build religious literacy and competence among political educators and students — always grounded in the practical needs of schools, universities, and community organizations we work with directly.

Sharing our work
We bring our findings to pre- and in-service teachers, community organisations, and public sector institutions — countering divisive narratives and strengthening sustainable democratic education.
