In the light of the upcoming Rio 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the study explores the stances of European civil society actors on issues related to the Green Economy as part of Sustainable Development. For that purpose, the study discusses the most important streams of debate related to the Green Economy within the context of sustainable development and aims at identifying different discourse within them. Furthermore, it analyses which issues are considered most pressing from the perspective of civil society actors and in how far these have already been taken into account in the various contributions to Rio+20. The study wants to shed light on the question what governance frameworks are deemed conducive for the development of a green economy from a civil society perspective. It will serve as an input for the European Economic and Social Committee when it adopts its position in preparation for Rio+20.
