Offsetting Projects for the voluntary carbon market in Germany: Possibilities and challenges as a contribution to climate change

Within the research study the German offset market will be analysed under the focus of its perspectives for climate protection, sustainable development and especially poverty alleviation.
Firstly the actual situation for the sales market within Germany will be evaluated in terms of a market analysis. The focal point will be on the additional benefits of CDM and voluntary projects in terms of social, ecological and economic advantages within the project countries. The study will try to answer the question how much this is a demand within the sales market in Germany. Do customers also ask for this benefits when they offset their emissions or doesn't it matter in a bigger extent.
In the core the market should be analysed first for voluntary offsetting on supplier and inquiry side. The objects of the interest are her above all the motivation for the offer of those climate protection projects with social and economic benefits as well as the arrangement of the market together with his consumers.
Special focus lies on the climate protection projects which are carried out for offsetting the emissions. Therefore different climate protection project within different countries should be examined and be valued in their effects. The projects are chosen because the intend to be best practice projects. Methods of the qualitative and quantitative social research in particular questionings and experts interviews are carried out.
It is planned to examine projects in India, Lesotho and Cameroon.
Beside an analysis of the carrying out organization, the structures and equipment on site the effects on the involved people should be researched.
The focal point is an the specific benefits of the project for the people involved and the structures, methods and tools that are used in successfully working projects.
After the evaluation specifically criteria catalogues are compiled to be able to evaluate these benefits.
Aim should be to make transferable statements for the project level and to value the offsetting projects in view of the contribution to the climate protection, however, also for the improvement of the socio-economic basic conditions in terms of poverty alleviation.
