Since 2011 Ursula Stegelmann is scientific associate and coordinator of the Berlin Centre of Caspian Region (BC CARE). The speaker of the Berlin Centre of Caspian Region is Prof. Miranda Scheurs. The BC CARE connects the already existing research activities at the Freie Universität Berlin and in Berlin-Brandenburg which deal with the use of natural resources in the Caspian Sea Region, South Caucasus and Central Asia, in an interdisciplinary Competence Pool. In particular the developments in the political and economic point of view and the legal, political, economic and ecological opportunities and risks were examined. The initial research focus was on energy and energy policy and in late 2009 a further focus was added as an activity field which is the use of water resources in Central Asia.
An integral part of BC CARE is the structured doctoral program "Caspian Region Environmental and Energy Studies" (CREES) which commenced operations under the umbrella of the Dahlem Research School for the winter semester 2009/10.
Dr. Stegelmann in her capacity as coordinator took over comprehensive performance tasks in 2011. She acts as an interface between those who work in the FU Berlin department, organs of self-government and academic institutions outside the university. As the coordinator of the PhD program "Caspian Region Environmental and Energy Studies" (CREES), she supervises the PhD scholars inside the program.
