Thorsten Heimann has been working as a research associate at the FFU since January 2019. His main fields of study are social science research on environmental and climate change, the development of urban and rural spaces, as well as the transformation of cultural and political constellations in the context of globalization. His work is shaped by mixed-methods research designs with a special focus on quantitative analyses. In his current project “GoIngVis - Governance by Integrative Visions” he explores and coordinates climate adaptation and participation processes in smaller cities.

He studied Cultural Sciences at the Universities of Leipzig and Lüneburg and obtained a Ph.D. in Sociology at the Freie Universität Berlin entitled “Climate Cultures and Space. Cultural Differences in Handling Climate Change in European Coastal Areas” achieving the highest grade “summa cum laude” (2011-2016). Before his PhD, Heimann completed a teaching apprenticeship at the Goethe Institute in Tokyo, Japan and managed international projects for the market and social research institute “Ipsos”.

Heimann worked as a research associate at the Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space at the Department “Dynamics of Communication, Knowledge and Spatial Development” (2010-2018).
