Governance against deforestation
Factors for effective implementation in exporting countries
News from Feb 03, 2026
On 21 January 2026, Prof. Dr. Michael Mason visited the Otto Suhr Institute to present, together with Prof. Dr. Lena Partzsch, the results of their research on the supply chain laws of the UK and the EU in the area of deforestation. In their research, they examined measures to curb consumption-related deforestation in the exporting countries of Brazil, Côte d'Ivoire and Indonesia. Factors affecting effectiveness were analysed (economic interdependence, national sovereignty and historical-institutional context). The presentation was followed by a lively discussion on the implications of the research in view of the poor prospects for effectiveness. New strategies for changing consumer behaviour in importing countries and exit strategies in the form of boycotts of agricultural commodities from countries with persistent deforestation were discussed.
