Dissertationsprojekt: Modeling impression formation within urban settings as a pathway for exploring behavioral patterns in cities

Many classical sociological works were concerned with modern life in urban settings and its effects on human social cognition. Nonetheless, the perception of cities as a source of alienation has radically changed leading to differentiated micro-sociological views of the interaction between urban environments, social identities, and behaviors. My doctoral project aims to contribute to this research field and is situated at the intersection between micro-sociology and social psychology. I will focus on the affective determinants of behavior as defined in the tradition of affect control theory. My contribution will consist – firstly – in updating previous works on the effect of settings on impression formation, explicitly aiming at understanding events within urban settings. For this purpose, I will collect data from French and German respondents through surveys and vignette experiments applying the semantic differential technique. Secondly, I will adopt a generative social science approach extensively used in urban studies for investigating the micro-sociological foundation of macro-sociological phenomena such as segregation and neighborhood effect.
