NFG Research Group 'Asian Perceptions of the EU' (www.asianperceptions.eu)
The NFG Research Group “Asian Perceptions of the EU” works and researches on EU-Asia relations as well as security and foreign policy matters in this context. It aims at identifying, analysing and assessing factors and mechanisms that affect the differences in perception of the EU (as the "sender") and Asian foreign-policy elites (as the targeted "recipients"). A recurrent topic of EU foreign policy research is the question if and to what extent the EU is a civilian power. Yet, which political, cultural or historical factors have influenced the perceptions of decision-makers in Asia’s emerging powers of the EU as a civilian power? To what extent have European norms and ideas been accepted, rejected or adapted?
From 2010 until 2015, the NFG has completed a major project dealing with "External views on the EU as a Civilian Power – India and China in Comparison". The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within its initiative "Europa von Außen gesehen" (External Views of Europe). The NFG is associated with the KFG Research College "The Transformative Power of Europe" at the Otto-Suhr-Institute of Freie Universität Berlin.
In 2015, the NFG has contributed to a study concerning the “Analysis of the Perception of the EU and EU’s Policies Abroad” under the lead of the Lithuanian Public Policy and Management Institute (PPMI). The study has served to provide the European Commission with in-depth knowledge about the perception of the EU and its public diplomacy initiatives in the EU's ten strategic partner countries. As a baseline for the forthcoming EU Public Diplomacy Strategy and supplementing the EU Foreign Policy Strategy, the study contributes to improving exchange and dialogue between the EU and its partner countries. In this context, the NFG has presented its findings on several occasions and will further develop and publish the key research results.
