Sergio Villanueva Baselga is an Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona and a Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Freie Universität Berlin. During his stay in Berlin (April-August 2026), he is developing the project Prophylactic Intimacies, which examines how young Spanish-speaking migrants in Berlin understand and engage with emerging biomedical prevention strategies in sexual health, such as PrEP and DoxyPEP. His research brings together medical anthropology and media studies to explore how information sources, cultural narratives, and stigma shape sexual health practices and perceptions among young people and other communities.

At Freie Universität Berlin, he is conducting ethnographic fieldwork based on in-depth interviews, while collaborating with the Research Area Medical Anthropology | Global Health. This research will also contribute to his forthcoming book project, Sexual Health, Communal Sex, and Utopian Ethics: Imagining the Post-Condom World. More broadly, his work focuses on media representations of sexual health, HIV, and queer cultures, and on how these narratives shape social imaginaries, stigma, and public health outcomes. Sergio Villanueva Baselga is carrying out his research stay under the José Castillejo Fellowship Programme of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
