Ekaterina Fomina is an investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Germany and originally from Russia. She has worked in journalism for more than 15 years, beginning her career at Novaya Gazeta and later continuing her work at other independent media outlets. Today, she contributes to a number of international publications, including leading German media outlets.

 

Her reporting focuses on human rights, war crimes, the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine, missing soldiers, deserters and conscientious objectors, as well as a wide range of other social issues.

 

In March 2025, a Russian court sentenced her in absentia to eight and a half years in prison in connection with her reporting on alleged war crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine.

 

In her free time, she loves exploring European cities, watching documentaries and spending time with her dog.
