November 1-2, 2018, Freie Universität Berlin, Seminarzentrum, Otto-von-Simson-Str. 26, 14195 Berlin, Room L115 und 113

The international conference “Ecologies of Gender: Contemporary Nature Relations and the Nonhuman Turn” brings together cutting-edge research on ecology and sustainability in both the social sciences and the environmental humanities. The focus will be exploring how the myriad theoretical approaches that merge in the titular “nonhuman turn” – such as the new materialism, speculative realism, object-oriented theory, and cultural animal studies – provide conceptual and theoretical means for understanding contemporary transformations of gender and nature relations. These transformations raise questions not only about gender and environmental justice, but also about conceptual and aesthetic articulations of gender, the body, and nature. Based on the analysis of specific theoretical, aesthetic, political and economic constellations in which nature relations are configured and negotiated, we want to explore the potentialities and possible limitations of the ‘nonhuman turn,’ broadly conceived. The conference is structured around four thematic panels: bodies, materialities, spaces, and temporalities.
