Matthew Sabbi promivierte zu Entwicklungssoziologie an der Universität Bayreuth. Daraufhin war er Postdoc der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung am Lehrstuhl für Entwicklungssoziologie (Mai 2017 bis Juni 2019) und Postdoc in der Abteilung Politik Afrikas und Entwicklungspolitik (Juli 2020 bis September 2023) an der Universität Bayreuth.
Seit Oktober 2023 ist Matthew ein postdoctoral researcher am Arbeitsbereich für Politik und Gesellschaft Afrikas des Otto-Suhr-Instituts.
Matthew Sabbis Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in der Entwicklungspolitik und der politischen Soziologie Afrikas, insbesondere zu Fragen der Dezentralisierung, lokaler politischer Reformen und politischer Netzwerke. Einen Regionalfokus hat er in Subsahara-Afrika, vor allem Ghana und Ruanda.
