The European Union has considerable competencies on mobility and migration today: Mobility within the EU has been at the core of the European integration project since the 1950s. Additionally, the EU has over the last decades developed policies on non-EU immigration. At the same time, we see that there are considerable conflicts linked to these issues, ranging from the closure of internal borders to battles over the scope, design and implementation of asylum and migration policies. Communication plays a central role for how policies are developed and how conflicts around policies play out. In this course, we will explore different theoretical and empirical approaches to communication in relation to EU migration and mobility policies.
