Around the globe, states participate in regional organizations (ROs). Traditionally, these institutions are thought to serve their members’ economic or security interests. Yet over the past few decades, ROs have become more active concerning member states’ domestic governance. Examples include election observation, sanctions in cases of democratic backsliding, or systems to promote and protect human rights. In this seminar, we will discuss theoretical arguments as to why such efforts exist as well as empirical evidence on how they have spread across the world and what effects they have in practice.
