Aim of the reasearch project is to examine Egypt's journalism strife for autonomy during the transformation phase after the revolutionary upheavals in 2011.

Aim of the reasearch project is to examine Egypt's journalism strife for autonomy during the transformation phase after the revolutionary upheavals in 2011. Theoretically, journalism can be understood as a social subsystem that tries to set its own rules according to the prevalent conditions. In the focus of this project are processes, discourses and measures with whom journalists negotiate professional autonomy during the transformation phase in Egypt. Because of global dynamics in journalism the results of the Egyptian-German research group will be compared to transformational processes in other parts of the world. Thereof, the exchange with scholars from other Arab countries and Germany will be sought in order to gain more comparative perspectives. Last but not least, the research will have a policy advise dimension, too. Through discussing the results of the research with Egyptian policy makers, NGOs, journalists and associations the research will have practical implications.

Responsible for the project are Prof. Dr. Carola Richter (FU Berlin) und Dr. des. Hanan Badr (Cairo University) and their research team.

The project will host its first conference "Egyptian Media & Journalism between Change and Continuity" in November 2015 in Berlin.
