Mathis Lohaus is a visiting professor at the Otto Suhr Institute, working with the Research Unit on European Integration (Prof. Dr. Börzel) and the Research Unit on International Relations (Prof. Dr. Panke). His research interests include international organizations and regionalism, the diffusion of knowledge and (policy) ideas, as well as global norm dynamics.

After completing his PhD, Dr. Lohaus worked as a research associate at the University of Greifswald. He later returned to Freie Universität Berlin, where he contributed to the DFG-funded research projects Global Pathways and TRANSNORMS (Prof. Dr. Risse). In 2025, he served as acting professor (substitute professor) for International Relations at Leibniz University Hannover.

Mathis Lohaus conducts research in several areas of International Relations and Regional Studies. This includes his participation in two projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG):

  • The research project TRANSNORMS examines how states and private actors translate international norms, influenced by their respective contexts. Empirically, the project focuses on global climate policy and human rights.
  • The research project Global Pathways explores the global diffusion of knowledge within the discipline of International Relations, contributing to the sociology of science and the debate on “Global IR.”

In addition, Dr. Lohaus has published articles and book chapters on various other topics. Based on his doctoral dissertation, his book Towards a Global Consensus Against Corruption: International Agreements as Products of Diffusion and Signals of Commitment was published by Routledge in 2019.
