The guest article has been published within the framework of the thematic project "Understanding Ukraine" of the Center for Liberal Modernity (LibMod).

The article explains why, from a perspective of the European Integration Studies, a credible membership perspective must be given to the Ukraine. It argues that this is an effective means of anchoring liberal democracy from the outside. "Acces­sion con­di­tion­al­ity empow­ers liberal reform coali­tions vis-à-vis con­ser­v­a­tive nation­al­ists and author­i­tar­ian pop­ulists". Further, the implications for the current debate on candidate status for the Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia and risks and opportunities are discussed.
