PUBLISHED NOW: The Environment in Global Sustainability Governance – Perceptions, Actors, Innovations
On the occasion of the Stockholm+50 Summit, Prof. Partzsch and OSI students organized a hybrid lecture series on the importance of political science for the environment and sustainability. The lectures of the international guest speakers were based on chapters for an edited volume, which is now published by Bristol University Press and can be downloaded for free.

With the 2030 Agenda, the United Nations has adopted far-reaching goals for sustainable development, the so-called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They are intended to link development and environmental agendas. The lecture series and edited volume focus on the resulting political tensions and synergies in key areas of global environmental governance, ranging from climate politics, growth critique and eco-feminism to the role of cities in implementing sustainable development. Internationally renowned scholars, such as Lyla Mehta, Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, and Philipp Pattberg, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, introduce the different fields. Student interviews with them have been included in abbreviated form in the volume. For this teaching project, Lena Partzsch was awarded the 2023 Teaching Prize of the German Political Science Association (DVPW).
“This timely book vigorously tackles the central challenge of the SDGs: how to resolve the tension between development featuring economic growth and the limitations of the Earth’s atmospheric, marine and terrestrial systems.”
Oran Young, University of California, Santa Barbara
“This volume reveals the international community’s ongoing struggle to reconcile environmental, social and economic goals through the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It is a must-read for anyone thinking about the challenge of reforming global sustainability governance beyond the SDGs.”
Michele Betsill, University of Copenhagen
The recordings of the guest lectures are freely available via YouTube.
