Module 1 "Introduction to Sociology" should be completed in the 1. semester (winter), Module 2 "Introduction to Empirical Social Research" in the 2. semester (summer). Each module consists of a lecture and an accompanying seminar (Proseminar). Students can choose this seminar from the various seminars on offer.
Module 1 teaches the conceptual, theoretical and methodological foundations of sociology. To complete the module, a term paper (approx. 4500 words) must be completed; this module examination is not graded.
Module 2 deals with the basics of empirical social research, taking into account different sociological research paradigms and designs. A 90-minute written examination is required. This module examination is graded.

4 Global Perspectives of Sociology |

Module 3 "Methods of Global Social Analysis" is scheduled for the 3. semester (winter) and Module 4 "Global Perspectives in Sociology" for the 4. semester (summer). Each module consists of a lecture and an accompanying seminar. Students can choose this seminar from the various seminars on offer.
Module 3 deals with different methodological approaches. Students learn to reflect on and carry out comparative analyses and analyses at global and regional level. A 90-minute written examination is required. This module examination is graded.
In Module 4, students learn to understand contemporary societies from a global and transnational perspective and to analyse them comparatively. The module establishes practical and application references for what has been learnt. Students are required to complete a 90-minute written examination or write a term paper (approx. 4500 words). This module examination is graded.

Module 5 (first selected module of the extension section) and Module 6 (second selected module of the extension section) are intended for the 5. and 6. semesters. The extension area consists of the three modules "Economics and Society in a Global Perspective" (a), "Culture and Society in a Global Perspective" (b) and "Politics and Society in a Global Perspective" (c). The modules each last two semesters and focus on economics, culture or politics.
Students must choose two of these three modules.
Each module consists of two accompanying seminars. Students can choose these seminars from the various seminars on offer.
Each module is completed with a written examination (120 minutes) or a term paper (approx. 4500 words). This module examination is graded.
