Berlin Conference on Hate Speech Analysis 2020

Mindspace Krausenstrasse

Mindspace Krausenstrasse

The event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, March 26 and Friday, March 27, 2020, the NOHATE research team will host an international and interdisciplinary conference on the challenges of hate speech detection and analysis at Mindspace Krausenstrasse in Berlin. We like to invite all researchers, especially from communication and media studies, social sciences, computer science, linguistics and psychology, who are currently working on manual and/or automated analysis of hate speech as well as other forms of incivility and offensive language.

Aims

In recent years, online hate speech has become an increasingly important issue both in public debate and in scientific research. Numerous research projects are addressing this issue from different perspectives. Nevertheless, many projects face similar challenges in areas such as data acquisition, text annotation and coding, data analysis and automation as well as documentation and archiving. The conference aims to address shared questions, challenges and issues by providing a space for international research networking and the exchange of theoretical questions, experiences with various approaches, and methodological and other practical research issues.

An overview of the research projects related to the conference can be found here.

Program

In order to make the conference as beneficial as possible, we ask that each participant submits, amongst other things, a short description of their research and a list of issues and questions that they hope to have addressed during the conference. On this basis, we will then put together a conference program that addresses as many of the issues and questions as possible. In this context, we may approach some participants to give talks, participate in panel discussions, or otherwise contribute to the conference. There will be no paper submissions or review process. The final program will be published by the end of February 2020. The conference will be held in English. No conference fees will be charged.
