Dissertationsprojekt

Affective Treatment and Digital Participation in Public Health

Drawn upon two research contexts – affect theories and self-care in digital participation, this research firstly attempts to identify affect as an indispensable element of self-care in digital participation. The Covid-19 pandemic has raised a unprecedented challenge to individual health, medical and healthcare systems and public life. In response to conflicts between individual demands and healthcare systems, I intend to put forward to a concept of “affective treatment”, as a digital culture emerging from digital communities and mass media, which shapes our perception on health and illnesses and reconfigures the access to public health. On this basis, this project is proposed to “thick describe” (Geertz, 1973) what types of affective treatment have been respectively interwoven in different socio-cultural public contexts, where how different approaches of digital participation in the pandemic have been performed and how the access to public health has been reconfigured. Ultimately, affect mechanisms on digital participation in public health and its relevant political public perceptions that we have taken for granted such as collectivism, individualism, cosmopolitanism are expected to be critically reflected. In terms of methodology, I am focusing more on qualitative methods (especially Internet ethnography, in-depth interview and discourse analysis).
