Welcome to the Department of Political and Social Sciences

The Department of Political and Social Sciences consists of the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science, the Institute of Sociology, the Institute for Media and Communication Studies, and the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology.

The department is one of the most research-intensive political and social scientific institutions in Germany. It collaborates intensively with other academic institutions in the Berlin research landscape, is actively involved in a number of graduate schools and junior research groups, and offers students a broad range of appealing, transdisciplinary Bachelor´s and Master´s programmes.

Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science

The Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science (OSI) is not only the largest institute of political science in Germany, but also the one with the broadest spectrum of research and teaching activities.

Institute of Sociology

The Institute of Sociology offers a broad spectrum of research activities, with particular focus on an analysis of transnationalization and Europeanization processes and international comparison, especially of European societies.

Institute for Media and Communication Studies

Research and teaching at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies is dedicated to various aspects of human and public communication with a focus on conditions, structures, processes, contents and effects of mediated communication.

Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology

Social and cultural anthropology can look back on a 150-year tradition in Berlin, and it has been a discipline at Freie Universität ever since the university was founded in 1948.
