Lecture on Media Freedom in Turkey

On Wednesday, 27 November, Gülçin Balamir Coşkun will give a lecture on "Freedom of Media in Turkey: Some Thoughts on Censorship and Self-Censorship" in the frame of the lecture series on Mobility, Activism & Politics of the "Einstein Fellows Research Group" at HU Berlin.
The violations of freedom of expression and the deteriorating state of media freedom in Turkey are well known. Which methods is Turkey's government using to pressure or to intimidate the journalists in the country? What are the effects of the media ownership structure? Is it possible to protect media freedom under these circumstances?

Prof. Dr. Carola Richter from Freie Universität Berlin, who is an expert on media systems and communication cultures, will be the discussant of the lecture.

Short bio: Gülçin Balamir Coşkun received her undergraduate degree from Galatasaray University and MA degree from University Paris I-Panthéon-Sorbonne. She holds a PhD in International Relations Program from Istanbul University. Her research focuses on authoritarianism, theories of democracy, media, and refugee movement. Her last article with Aslı Yılmaz Uçar on local responses to the Syrian refugee movement has been recently published in Movements - Journal for Critical Migration and Border Regime Studies. She actually works as Einstein Fellow at the Institut für Sozialwissenschaften, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In her new research at HU, she explores the relations between media and politics in the AKP Era.
Every Wednesday evening during the winter semester 2019/20, the lecture series on Mobility, Activism & Politics by Einstein Fellows Research Group at HU, explores the processes of democratic de-consolidation and increasing migration.
