How contradiction can be explored in the discourse around Rammstein

The journal Publizistik has published another article on the theorization and research of media practices of contradiction in networked public spheres.

News from Apr 23, 2025

In this new article, the five researchers Margreth Lünenborg, Tanja Thomas, Dagmar Hoffmann, Susanne Kinnebrock and Susanne Eichner continue to work on their research approach to practices of contradiction. The approach makes it possible to record, analyze and interpret practices of contradiction as well as to identify recurring patterns and structural conditions of contradiction.

In the English-language article "Practices of contradicting in networked publics. A proposal for understanding social conflictual dynamics.", a case analysis of the public media discourse surrounding the singer and Rammstein frontman Till Lindemann, who has been accused of massive forms of sexualized violence, is also carried out. In doing so, they trace a complex, contingent and paradoxical communication process in which various levels of mutual contradiction are negotiated without a “socially satisfactory, final assessment of the conflict” (p. 20) being achieved.
