More than 60 international researchers attended the conference Affect – Media – Power (29 June – 1 July 2017) at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies and discussed current theoretical and empirical approaches to study emotion and affect. They focused on integrating these perspectives into the broader field of media and communication research.

The conference was co-organized by the Journalism Studies Division, the project “Transcultural Emotional Repertoires in and through Reality TV” within the CRC 1171 “Affective Societies” and the German Association of Communication Research (DGPuK) divisions “Sociology of Media and Communication” and “Media, Gender and Public Sphere”.

Keynotes were held by Jens Eder (Potsdam-Babelsberg), Brigitte Hipfl (Klagenfurt) and Zizi Papacharissi (Chicago). Prof. Papacharissi was invited to FU Berlin within the partnership between the Institute for Media and Communication Studies and the Communication Department of the University of Illinois at Chicago. She gave insights into her research projects on the use of social media platforms by protest groups in Egypt and by the Occupy movement.
